2006 Rusty Shed Chardonnay 6-Pack

Pale golden in colour, this wine is starting to show nice development. The aroma is flinty, with a good dose of that Twenty Mile Bench minerality. There are oak-derived subtleties such as butterscotch and toast, well matched by a hit of roasted almond. The palate is viscous and well rounded, with a refreshing fruity acidity. Apple, pineapple, citrus and marzipan complement the already mentioned characters, and the finish is clean and dry.

2011 Bruce Block Pinot Noir

  • Vintage: 2011
  • Wine Type: Red Wine
  • Varietal: Pinot Noir
  • Appellation: Twenty Mile Bench
  • Acid: 6.5g/L
  • PH: 3.55
  • Alcohol %: 12.30%
  • Vineyard Notes: Northern-most block; next to escarpment/Bruce Trail. Slight south facing slope.Clone 115 is thicker skinned with more tannin & colour extracted. Loamy soils with shallow bed of limestone beneath.
  • Production Notes: All of our Pinot Noir wines are essentially made in the same fashion - hand picking, sorting, destemming and fermented in stainless steel vats with all the tools to make the best wines possible. In the summer of 2012, a selection of 12 barrels were put aside - 4 each from what we felt were the 'best expressions' of these particular blocks within our Pinot Noir blocks. A decision was made to keep these wines in neutral oak until the late winter of 2013. The wines were racked, blended and then bottled -- all with the intent to capture the true nature of these 'micro block' wines.
  • Winemaker Notes: Aged in Marcel Cadet barrels, new, medium toast; favoured for their minimal impact on flavour & aromatics. Their tight grain also works well with the big tannins of these wines – the tight grain allows for slow tannin integration between the oak & wine creating subtlety vs. big unbalanced tannins.

2014 Chardonnay

  • Vintage: 2014
  • Wine Type: White Wine
  • Varietal: Chardonnay
  • Appellation: Twenty Mile Bench
  • Acid: 6.4
  • PH: 3.45
  • Bottling Date: September 2015
  • Residual Sugar: 3 g/L
  • Alcohol %: 13
  • Winemaker Notes: With more than 22 acres (9 ha) of Chardonnay planted in the Flat Rock Vineyard, it is second only to Pinot Noir in terms of number of vines. Small batch pressing and barrel fermenting our Chardonnay means we are able to keep individual parcels separate throughout fermentation and élevage. After 8 months barrels are selected for our Rusty Shed and Estate Chardonnay based on style. The 2014 Estate Chardonnay uses minimal new oak but is 100% French barrels of varying ages to ensure we capture the fruit complexity. The wine is then blended & bottled after 10 months in barrel to ensure a vibrant expression of Chardonnay grown in our soils.

About us

Company details

We are here at Flat Rock Cellars for two reasons. First, we’re here to make great wine. Second, we’re here to offer you a truly personal wine experience. Everything we do comes from these two basic principles.

We start in the vineyard with low yields, progressive viticulture practices and hand picking and sorting the grapes. We continue inside the winery with a sexy gravity-flow design and the latest in wine-making equipment from around the world.

But that’s just the tip of it. You see, it’s no fun for us if you aren’t enjoying yourself. So you’ll find an infectious sense of fun and lack of pretension at Flat Rock. We love what we do and we want to share that sense of wonder about the mysteries of the vine. From the tasting bar to our wine education programs – it’s all about getting you involved.

Founded in 1999 on a spectacular piece of the Niagara Escarpment known as the Jordan Bench – Flat Rock Cellars is perched on a gently rolling slope studded with vines. The winery building is a quirky, glass-encased, hexagonal masterpiece that‘s distinctive and fun. From here you can enjoy our crowning glory, the breathtaking views of the Peninsula and across Lake Ontario to Toronto.

Look closely at our logo and you’ll see the image of a woman holding a basket of grapes. To us, she is the embodiment of winemaking. Our predominant colour is red not only because it is the colour of wine, but also of passion; and we are nothing if not passionate about winemaking! The rocks that are the geological foundation of the winery and are found throughout the property are the roots of our Flat Rock Cellars name.
