About us

Company details

As a company Stölzle Lausitz can be compared to a strong tree: its roots go deep in history. Since the Middle Ages the Lausitz region has been a center of glass making art. The experiences of entire generations gave and give Stölzle the strength to weather the test of time. The well trained workforce and diverse range of products give the business its competitive edge. And on a daily basis the new sprouts of our design and product ideas reach out into the future. Read more about the special something of the Stölzle Lausitz company.

»I have always been of the opinion, that there are more important things than gold. Glass, for example, is more useful in my opinion.«

Theodor Fontane, Poet Laureate

High-tech from the Start
Founded in 1889 in Weißwasser »Oberlausitzer Glaswerke J. Schweig and Co.« was a hightech business from the beginning. The glassworks initially produced hollow glasses for the medical field as well as glass tubes and pistons for light bulbs. Tableware followed later on. The developers of Stölzle Lausitz set important milestones on the long way to the modern wine glass. This is not limited to the form of the drinking glasses, decanter, carafes, and pitchers. Tableware has to be functional as well: sturdy, emphasizing the flavors while at the same time light and balanced in the hand.

Turmoil, Turn, Transition
During the times of the East German Republic the glassworks in Weißwasser was the biggest steamware producer in the country. 4000 people were employed here. German reunification shook the industrial landscape of Eastern Germany like an earthquake and countless businesses failed . Speculators purchased companies just to make a quick dollar. The glassworks in Weißwasser was also sucked into this maelstrom. Many employees lost their jobs and the end of the business loomed on the horizon.
In 1996 things turned for the better when Stölzle Oberglas AG took ownership of the glassworks. The Austrian family business gave it a leaner, more efficient and sustainable structure as well as a new name: Stölzle Lausitz GmbH. The parent company modernized the production halls and the three production lines in Weißwasser. Following the restructuring the parent company made the company stand-alone once more. With success. Stölzle Lausitz, as an autonomous business, returned to the top of the German steamware industry.

Modern Times - from the Melting Oven to the Mould
Since then Weißwasser produces fine glassware using the most modern processes, which are at the forefront for the industry. Two glass tanks allowfor the machine production of leadless crystal glasses. Wine glasses produced here can barely be distinguished from hand-blown glasses in quality. Thus Stölzle is able to serve the requirements of the most demanding customers.
Fine glasses are a part of lifestyle. What is en vogue today may be old news tomorrow. As a result, the management team is taking the glassworks on a sustainable course. Independently it is constantly developing its products. In addition, Stölzle produces individual designs for customers and prints, paints and engraves glasses.

Taste-Design for the Palate and the Eye
»Form follows function.« This principle defined the Bauhaus movement. Wilhelm Wagenfeld, a student of the Dessau Design School, carried this idea to Weißwasser in 1930. In addition, the pioneer of the industrial design at Stölzle significantly influenced the appreciation of quality. Both things are still visible even today in the functional design of the Stölzle glasses. It combines aesthetics and enjoyment.
The taste-design of Stölzle Lausitz emphasizes the individual character of each drink: Wines, sparkling wines, spirits, cocktails … the full aroma can only develop in the suitable glass. To find the proper size and form takes both experience and endurance. Both are characteristics which Stölzle has shown over 126 years.

»We need long-lasting quality products.«

Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Pioneer of the Bauhaus Movement

Professional Quality lasts longer
Catering, hotels, vintners and the beverage industry were major drivers of growth. However, wine connoisseurs and friends of fine dining also learned to appreciate the professional quality of the Stölzle glasses. They are dishwasher safe and a Stölzle glass will rarely break. The especially pure sand from Lausitz gives it a special brilliance. Whit its high quality standards Stölzle clearly distinguishes itself from discount providers.

Internationally appreciated
Stölzle Lausitz delivers worldwide. Caterers and hotel owners from Abu Dhabi to Zurich know that glasses from Stölzle deliver both on price and quality . As one of Germany’s biggest producer of stemware Stölzle can operate with the perspective of a market leader: reliably, flexibly and expediently. This is ensured not least by the large warehouse in Weißwasser.

Glass. Clear. Stölzle.
In short, Stölzle Lausitz is in a class of itself. Those who are loyal to their customers and employees for 126 years are not quickly distracted by short term thoughts of success. Stölzle Lausitz for the future is committed to sustainability and fair working conditions.
