Created in 10th September 1756, the Douro Winemaking Region is the oldest demarcated and regulated wine region in the world. It represents two Designations of Origin: Port and Douro wines.
Port and Douro can only be produced in the Douro Demarcated Region. These designations of origin, Port and Douro, are the guarantee of the distinctive and unique nature of these wines and their origin, the Douro Valley. Their distinctiveness attests to the fact that the wines are intimately linked to the this territory.
This uniqueness is guaranteed and approved by the Port and Douro Wines Institute (IVDP), the sole body responsible for the control, certification, promotion and protection of the wide range of wines produced with these designations of origin.
It is through the innovation of the producers and the effort of the IVDP that quality and consumer confidence are maintained.
