ARTIGAS

SOLID FOUNDATIONS

Artigas is a vintage from vines that are mainly between 10 – 35 years old. Some of the Carignan vines are even 90 years old!
80% of the grapes are produced in Bodegas Mas Alta’s own vineyard. The rest come from rented or purchased vines.


PLANT FOCUSED

Our plots are located at altitude and solely on schist soil. The planting stock is taken from sélections massales of old Carignan, Syrah, Grenache and Cabernet vines.
We do not harvest any grapes during the first three years after planting. Instead, we concentrate on the formation of each vine. We then ensure that each plant is balanced. The aim is to obtain a vine which will ensure quality production. Winter pruning, debudding and thinning are processes that are carried out depending on each vine stock. A vine is a group of individuals, all of whom are different.

ALL ABOUT ARTIGAS

The blend is mainly made up of grenache, carignan and cabernet. The authentic nature of the regions chosen for the young plantings and the daily efforts of our wine growers make Artigas a genuine and delightful invitation to enjoy our vision of Priorat.

WHY MAKE YET ANOTHER WINE?Over the various vintages, we have learnt to understand how each of our parcels of land work and react. Our aims in viticulture, winemaking and ageing are constantly evolving. Cirerets represents our desire to move towards a purer and more accurate way of expressing Priorat.

CARIGNAN AND GRENACHE - AN INHERITANCE WHICH SCHOULD BE DEEPLY APPRECIATED

Terroir and History are two notions which we feel are difficult to disassociate. Thus, with every vintage, we intend to use more Carignan and Grenache in our wines. It is true that these varieties have been grown in the Priorat for a very long time. Each year we observe their perfect adaptation to the soil and climatic conditions, which are so unique to this wine appellation.

A NEW OUTLOOK ON CULTIVATING THE VINE

As we know that a healthy vine is key to making great wines, we are striving to go just that bit further and to truly cultivate a well balanced plant. From the start we have used methods which respect and protect the soil and the vines. Now, thanks to the knowledge of older generations and by incorporating new technology, we are starting to profoundly convert our vineyards to practices which combine both organic farming techniques with biodynamic ones.

LA BASSETA

THE QUEST FOR AUTHENTICITY

Our La Basseta vintage is the result of a blend from several plots of carignan, grenache and cabernet. The vines vary in age from 15 – 100 years. Our selection criteria for producing this wine is based on successfully expressing the terroir combined with a sensation of finesse and indulgence.

A WINE WITH A FEMININE FEEL?

Throughout the process of producing our vintages, we aim to obtain sensitive and complex wines. La Basseta is undoubtedly the most feminine wine in our range. The intensity of the fruit blended with a long and silky finish make for a feminine feel...

THE AGEING PROCESS

Selected by Michel Tardieu, our barrels originate from France’s most noble forests. Wines are matured for 14-18 months on fine lees enabling us to obtain the quintessential expression of each vintage. A key stage in the wine-making process, maturing adds that vital touch of personality to a great wine.

Based in the traditional village of La Vilella Alta, BODEGAS MAS ALTA is the culmination of five Belgian partners' common desire to produce a great wine. This dream is now taking shape thanks to the advice of Michel Tardieu and Philippe Cambie, and as the result of the work done by a passionate team every day.

Tuned in to the grape

After slow maturation under the blazing sun, harvest time arrives. One word is on everyone's lips: RESPECT. Respect for the work of Nature, the work of generations of men and women who have toiled down the years to obtain this fruit.

Quality is always uppermost in our minds at every stage of the grape's processing. In fact, the equipment at Bodegas Mas Alta is designed to preserve the grape's intrinsic qualities as much as possible. Storage in cold rooms, a double sorting table, the concrete tanks are filled by grafity, temperature control, etc., – technology is used with respect for the fruit.

Vinification is gentle, with no extremes, the aim being to reveal the typical PRIORAT characteristics. Then we come to the  aging stage, which varies between 14 and 18 months. During this time the wine will be honed and refined, affirming its identity, in small French oak barrels.
