With growing expertise of their vineyards, Bodegas Salentein identifies more opportunities on their estate for making Iconic Wines. As the pioneer of the Uco valley and with more than 20 years developing this top wine region from Argentina, Salentein presents two new Single Vineyards Malbecs. One is from its “El Tomillo Estate” located in the heart of the renowned Geographic Indication Paraje Altamira and the other one from its “San Pablo Estate” located in the highest terroir in the Uco Valley that is in the process of becoming a new Geographic Indication.
Since 2010 Bodegas Salentein has been successfully producing four varieties of Single Vineyard wines, namely Malbec, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and a Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc. The Single Vineyard wines express Salenteins deep knowledge of Uco Valley terroir, based on two decades of hands on living and farming there. Each wine comes from a single selected plot located in a different top sub-region from Uco Valley, which over the years has produced wines with great personality and varietal expression.
Next to the existing Single Vineyard Malbec coming from La Pampa Estate, two new Malbecs will be presented. One comes from San Pablo Estate and the other comes from El Tomillo Estate.Salentein Single Vineyard San Pablo Estate Malbec, Plot N°14
This vineyard is located in the highest part of the Uco Valley at 1.480 meters above sea-level and was planted in 2007 with selected Malbec vines, with original rootstock at a density of 5.000 plants per hectare. The cold climate, together with a sandy-loam texture soil with abundance of medium size stones covered in a layer of calcium carbonate in the deeper soil, results in an exotic expression of Malbec. The wine has intense and complex aromas of black fruits, violets and figs. In the mouth it is wide and concentrated, with silky tannins, graphite notes, refreshing acidity and long elegant finish. This wine was fermented in French oak barrels and then it was aged in French oak barrels for 16 months. A limited amount of only 1.500 bottles have been produced of the 2014 vintage of the Salentein Single Vineyard San Pablo Estate Malbec.Salentein Single Vineyard El Tomillo Estate Malbec, Plot N°1
This vineyard is located in the heart of the Geographic Indication Paraje Altamira at 1.050 meters above sea-level and was planted in 2007 with selected Malbec vines on rootstock 101-14 at a density of 5.000 plants per hectare. The cold climate, together with a sandy texture soil with calcium carbonate present in all the soil profile and a high percentage of medium and big size stones covered in a layer of calcium carbonate in the deeper soil, results in an elegant expression of Malbec. This wine has intense and complex aromas of red fruits and different spices. In the mouth it is savoury and complex, with silky tannins, a refreshing acidity and long elegant finish. Like the Single Vineyard Malbec coming from San pablo Estate, this wine was also fermented in French oak vats and then it was aged in French oak barrels for 16 months. A limited amount of only 5.700 bottles have been produced of the 2014 vintage of the Salentein Single Vineyard El Tomillo Estate Malbec.LUIS GUTIERREZ ABOUT SAN PABLO:
“Salentein is working with Zuccardi and Tapiz towards the creation of an appellation of San Pablo, a cooler and higher altitude zone in Valle de Uco, where they were pioneers.”
“San Pablo, which is a very cold zone close to the mountains in between Tunuyán and Gualtallary. There, the growers seem to be working hand in hand, most notably Salentein and Zuccardi, to get the appellation completed. But what is important is that the character of the wines can be perceived, and Id say in the case of San Pablo—perhaps one of the most extreme places in Valle de Uco—it certainly is”.
- Luis Gutierrez 2016 Argentina Report “The Sky is the limit” - The Wine Advocate, #228 December 2016 ABOUT GI PARAJE ALTAMIRA:
Altamira is located within the heart of the alluvial cone of the Tunuyán River in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Within the district of La Consulta in the southern Uco Valley of Mendoza, it has a surface area of 3660 hectares in total, of which approximately 1,900 hectares are cultivated.
The Paraje soil is characterized by the presence of rocks, which in some cases exceed 2 metres in diameter. These rocks have a white appearance due to the intense coverage of calcium carbonate, which may reach a thickness up to 3 mm. This strong coverage indicates the Pleistocene age of river and marine sediments.ABOUT BODEGAS SALENTEIN:Bodegas Salentein is the pioneer in crafting premium wines in the Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina.
