Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986, a real gem made by Marqués de Murrieta, has been rated 100 Points by Robert Parker. This is the first time such an important accolade is given to a white wine is Spain.

After being tasted by Luis Gutierrez, the critic responsible for reviewing Spanish wines in Robert Parker's ‘The Wine Advocate’, he states that it is "one of the best white wines I've ever tasted in my whole life." Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986 stands as the only wine that has reached the highest score, an even more difficult achievement for a white wine.

Wineyards: The grapes selected for this wine come from Pago Capellanía, planted in 1945 and located at an altitude of 485 metres in the highest area of our Finca Ygay. Rioja Alta.

Varieties: 97% Viura, 3% Malvasía.

Harvest: Production began in early October, at a slow and progressive pace, as required by the weather conditions which, in turn, contributed to the optimum development of the grapes and also helped to achieve the optimum moment of ripeness. Grapes of the Viura variety, which produces large bunches of small grapes, were the first to be harvested. Alcohol content of the grapes was 13.5%, with high levels of acidity.

Vinification: The whole cluster of grapes was crushed and then pressed in a wooden twin-screw vertical wine press. Fermentation took place in American oak barrels.

Ageing process: 252 months in 225 litres American oak barriques. 67 months in a concrete tank.

Bottling date: 29th January 2014.

Number of bottles: 8.125 bottles (75 cl.).

Food paring: Iberian Ham, stuffed capon, truffled cheese, white veal and hake cheeks.

Recommended serving temperature: Between 14ºC (57F) and 15ºC (59F).

Parker · Wine Advocate (Usa): 100 puntos. It seems to be getting younger and younger with time in the glass; I have no doubt we're talking about a white for the next 50 years. The wine is simply stunning.

Light pink color full of life and elegant. Fruity and fresh with an amazing complexity.

Own vineyards: Marques de Murrieta wines are produced only with grapes from its 300 hectares vineyards (Finca Ygay) surrounding the winery located in Rioja’s sub-region of Rioja Alta.

Grape variety: 100% Mazuelo.

Manual Harvest: 29th September.

Winemaking: Made exclusively with Mazuelo variety. Right after reception in the cellar grapes are de-stemmed and grape juice is separated from grape skins in order to extract the essence of the purest grape juice that will be fermented in a stainless steel tank at a controlled temperature of 10º C (50ºF) avoiding malolactic fermentation. After fermentation the wine is left in contact with its lees for 40 days adding density.

Bottling Date: 20th April 2016.

Pairing: Creamy rice with squid, carabinero prawns and crispy pancetta; Grilled scallops, mashed potatoes with truffles; Garinated partridge with duck pate with pepper; Cold Tomato, avocado and mint soup with smoked eel.

Serving Suggestion: In order to enjoy the full aromatic profile we recommend serving it cold at a temperature between 8º-9ºC (46ºF).

Tangible proof of elegance, balance and constancy characteristic of the Marques de Murrieta Winery and its surrounding vineyards situated in the Ygay Estate, it is a red reserva wine with a balanced aging of two years in new and partly new American oak barrels and a year and a half in bottle. The result is an elegant wine that combines complexity and fineness, summing up the best attributes of our identity and actuality. With our daily work, respect and love for our land, the selection of the best grapes and the attention to detail throughout its almost four years of production, Marqués de Murrieta is a safe and constant value of the best quality.

Own vineyards: Grapes are sourced from our Ygay Estate: 300 hectares of vineyards surrounding the winery in the southernmost point of Rioja Alta. Altitude ranges from 320 to 485 meters above sea level.

Grape varieties: 89% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo, 4% Graciano, 2% Garnacha.

Manual Harvest: September, 13th to 29th.

Winemaking: Grapes are first de-stemmed and then fermented in stainless steel tanks for 8 days at controlled temperature in constant skin contact. During fermentation pumping over and punching down operations are regularly carried out. These processes ensure both effective and gentle colour and aroma extraction. Afterwards the solid parts of the grapes were pressed in vertical presses with double screws.

Ageing process: 20 months in 225 litre American oak barrels, 8 months of which happen in new barrel. A minimum of 12 months in bottle before release.

Pairing: Oven baked sea bass, potatoes and vegetables; Fresh cod poached in virgin olive oil, potatoes and green peppers; Steamed shade fish, peas puree and cheese soup; Oven baked suckling pig with candied orange sauce.

Serving suggestions: We recommend decanting the wine 20 minutes before serving. Recommended serving temperature: 16º - 18º C (60º - 65º F).

James Suckling (Usa): 94 points. "Fabulous aromas of crushed berry and dark fruits with walnuts, hazelnuts, and ginger. Cinnamon and honey melon too. Full-bodied, very tight and firm. Linear backbone of fruit and tannins. Very long and racy. 22 months in American oak (six months new and then racked into used). Beautiful now but needs another two or three years to soften. A triumph."

Wine Advocate - Parker (Usa): 93 points. There is gob-smacking precision and elegance here. It’s a pure wine with no oak that is super harmonious, floral and fragrant. I simply fell in love with the nose. Now onto the palate. The entry is really fluid, and then it explodes in your mouth, filling it along a thread of fine acidity making it long and tasty. It has the same astonishing purity and harmony, focus and precision found in the nose. This has to be the best Reserva from Murrieta in recent times. Bravo! One million bottles produced, but all the wine is one single lot and all the bottles you can find are exactly the same just they are bottled continuously for four months. Mind boggling quality for the price asked.-- Luis Gutierrez

Wine Spectator (Usa): 90 points. Spicy aromas lead to flavors of vanilla, cherry, fresh herb and mineral in this expressive red. Though oaky notes are prominent, there’s a core of focused fruit, and the light structure is fresh and balanced. Graceful and alluring. Drink now through 2021. 5,750 cases imported.—T.M.
