ProWein 2012 with New Record Figures and Innovative Impulses for the Sector

6 March saw the close of a very successful ProWein 2012 in Düsseldorf. Over its three days this leading fair for the international wine and spirits sector brought together 3,930 exhibitors from some 50 countries and considerably more than 40,000 trade visitors from throughout the world.

This once again meant even more sectoral experts meeting for cross-border business and discussions than at the 2011 event (3,635 exhibitors, 39,034 visitors). Growth on the supply side here was reflected in all regions of the world – such as France, Argentina, Australia and China. It was also once again particularly pleasing to see the disproportionate rise in the number of international trade visitors coming from all the relevant wine import markets around the world. The number of visitors attending from all trading channels was higher than ever before. Some 50% of visitors came from the international wholesale, retail and specialist retail segment, while the restaurant and the hotelier trade made up the second-largest visitor group. The number of managers attending rose – with once again more than 60% coming from top management. A total of over 80% of visitors are directly involved in purchase decision-making. “In addition to the great international flair at the event the expertise of visitors also confirmed ProWein as the decision-makers’ fair,” said Hans Werner Reinhard, Deputy Managing Director at Messe Düsseldorf, summing up: “Once again this year ProWein was the best basis for business in the international wine and spirits sector – and at the same time an inspiring trend show.”

Exhibitors Delight at the Success of the Fair

The positive verdict was a result of the good mood prevailing in the halls. Some 98% of visitors said they were satisfied with their visit to ProWein – over 94% saw their objectives here fully met. Many exhibitors report of in-depth discussions held with potential new customers as well as with existing ones. Summing up the German market Monika Reule, Managing Director of the German Wine Institute, said: “The high number of trade visitors once again underlined the importance of ProWein as a leading international orders fair. The mood amongst German exhibitors at this year’s ProWein was extremely positive. The great interest taken in our wines by the top-notch international audience, from both the retail and restaurant trade and the media, was an accolade to the quality of the 2011 vintage – one available here in Düsseldorf for the first time in this scope. The wines presented a wonderfully balanced and fruity flavour already at this early stage. Gratifyingly, after the small harvest of the previous 2011 vintage, sufficient quantities were once again available in virtually all German wine-growing regions. This means the sector can meet the sustained high demand for our wines largely with no problem at all.”

The nations of the New World were also extremely satisfied. Su Birch, Chief Executive Officer of Wines of South Africa, was delighted at the high visitor turnout: “ProWein is a great event every year! We held intense discussions at our stand and were also able to welcome more visitors to our seminars held jointly with Argentina, California, Chile and New Zealand entitled ‘Flavours – Aromen”.

High-Proof Specialities

In the spirits segment once again over 300 international suppliers presented a wide-ranging portfolio of top-notch classics and exciting new launches. For instance, renowned distillery Brennerei Ziegler introduced its new whisky “Aureum 1865” to the international trade audience for the first time at ProWein. Also featured for the first time was a Chinese joint participation from Guizhou presenting its tradition-rich luxury drink Moutai. Tracy Zhao, Deputy General Manager at Gui Zhou Guo Tai Liquor Ltd., came to a positive conclusion: “ProWein is an extremely professional and international event. We had many discussions with interested buyers from throughout the world and already now look forward to ProWein 2013.”

Colourful Range of Events

Alongside the wide range on show the supporting programme at ProWein also had exciting discoveries and expert background information in store. The central Tasting Zone under the heading “Ursprungswein – Wines of Origin”, the delicatessen special show “Wine’s Best Friends” as well as the “Do-it-Yourself Lab – Infusions, Bitters & Co” in the FIZZZ Lounge and the numerous exhibitor events on the most varied of themes brought inspiration and offered visitors specific ideas for their own businesses. And after the fair closed for the night delightful evening events thrilled local and international visitors as part of the “ProWein goes City” initiative.

ProWein 2013

Next spring will see the sector meet up again in Germany. Next time invitations will be extended not only by the leading international fair ProWein in Düsseldorf but also by Intervitis Interfructa, the leading technology show for wine, fruit and fruit juices in Stuttgart (24-27/04/2013). ProWein 2013 in Düsseldorf will run from 24 to 26 March 2013. To meet rising demand from throughout the world further exhibition areas will be added and the hall concept will be restructured. Relevant talks with the exhibiting companies and associations were held during the fair and details of the new structure will be announced shortly.
