Leipzig/Tel Aviv, 4. March 2009: In just under a decade, the young Recanati winery has obtained a dominant position in Israel’s wine industry and also gained international recognition.
„Seeing one of your oldest dreams come true is the most wonderful reward that life can offer“ says banker Lenny Recanati, whose family emigrated from Italy to Israel at the beginning of the twenties century. In the year 2000, the successful businessman achieved his long desired dream and founded the Recanati winery with a group of wine- loving friends. Their goal was to produce kosher wines of highest quality at affordable price.
Considerable investments in modern cellar techniques and vineyards enabled Recanati to become one of the most modern and successful wineries in the Israel. 700,000 bottles of wine are produced yearly in four labels: Special Reserve, Reserve, Recanati, and Yasmin. Recanati grows its grapes in some of Israel`s best sites: Manara and Kerem Ben Zimra in upper Galilee, where the cooler climate offers ideal conditions for high quality grapes, and the Ella Valley and lower Galilee whose climates are influenced more by their proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. The grapes of diverse characters allow the winemakers of Recanati to produce a very nuanced and versatile spectrum of wines.
The chief winemaker of Recanati, Gil Shatsberg, is a graduate of University of California Davis. He is supported by Ido Lewinsohn, who completed his degree as oenologist at the University of Mailand and thereafter worked in Australia, France, and Italy. The philosophy of both winemakers combines the influences of the New as well as the Old World styles. Wine connoisseurs identify the Italian notes of Recanati’s wines and therefore it is of no surprise that the main export countries are Italy and the USA, followed by Canada, Australia, Japan, France and Germany.
The growing interest in Recanaty winery is also mirrored by achievements at large international wine competitions. The Flagship wine of Recanati, the Special Reserve 2004, a Cuvee made of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, was distinguished with a gold medal and as Israel´s best wine at the latest wine competition Les Citadelle du Vin in Bordeaux. At the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2008 in London, the same wine obtained silver and a distinction as the best wine of its class. The winemakers of Recanati were able to score once again with a Rosé and a Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, each obtaining gold medals at the Challenge International du Vin in France.
