Innovative solutions in wine production or marketing - that’s what our special show “same but different” was all about. Ten international participants had the opportunity to present their ideas at ProWein 2016 on an area of 140m².

New ways, courageous steps and creative ideas had their representation space and provided inspiration and invited visitors to exchange ideas. During the trade fair, events introducing individual projects or personalities took place several times a day.

Vineyard Abril

Bio but more - The secret behind the trend!

Photo: Vineyard Abril
At the Abril winery, the largest organic wine estate in the South Baden town of Kaiserstuhl, there is a real sense of new beginnings. Since 2015 the three young wine experts, Eva-Maria Köpfer, Sebastian Faber and Daniel Hank, have been at helm of this 270 year old winery. Their starting capital is considerable: 20 hectares of premium land under rigorously organic vine cultivation as well as a new estate building with multiple award-winning architecture and state-of-the-art cellar technology. However, just being “organic” is not enough for the young winemakers. Abril already boasts largely vegan wines in its range. And in future the Abril wines with an emphasis on red and wine Burgundies will be even more terroir-focused. For this cellar manager Hank looks here to the old wine yeast “Yeast 1895”, also called Sleeping Beauty Yeast. This produces authentic wines with a clear line and typical aromas of the relevant grape variety. Abril has also adopted its own path when it comes to classifying its wines – differentiating here between maturing styles that it calls “Frucht” (fruit), “Stein” (stone/mineral) and “Zeit” (time/reserve).

Brixius-Böllinger

Wake up with Brixius!

Photo: Winegrapes Brixius-Böllinger
Manuel is 34 years young – and already a Riesling expert. He grew up among vines in his family’s winery in Maring on the river Mosel. Later he studied winemaking and oenology in the international wine city of Geisenheim in the historic Rheingau area. At the winery of American Riesling pioneer Hermann J. Wiemer in the State of New York he learned even more about the multiple faces of Riesling. Now he is back home in the family business and besides producing typical Mosel Riesling he spends his time with new ideas. He has combined the aromatic and flavourful worlds of coffee and wine – Brixius wakes you up!

Wineyard Fuchs Steinklammer

The orange Fox from Vienna

Photo: Wineyard Fuchs-Steinklammer
Vienna is the only metropolis that grows wine within its city limits. The Gemischter Satz, a mixed field blend consisting of at least three different varieties grown in a single vineyard, is the favourite and most famous wine from Vienna. Brothers Alexander & Stefan are 10th generation winemakers and part of a new movement in viticulture in Vienna. In their pursuit of creating real and pure wines they have handcrafted Vienna’s first skin-fermented Gemischter Satz. Both brothers are not scared of venturing on unknown paths, so it shouldn’t be surprising that they have also planted and produced Vienna’s first, and very successful, red Gemischter Satz.

San Vigilio Ltd. - Pinocchio

First a long nose - afterwards enjoyment!

Photo: Pinochio Barrique
“Why Pinocchio? Because it is a piece of wood that comes to life. Just like the hero in Collodi’s novel. But in this case it is not a wooden puppet. But a bottle. A wooden one.

We followed the story of a lifeless piece of wood that comes to life, and at the end the fulfillment of a dream. Maturity-aging that only comes through everyday experiences. Good and bad, actions of which we are proud and others that we would like to delete. All this has made us what we are today. This is Pinocchio Barrique…. A real boy!”

Bargylus

For the love of wine!

Foto: Weinfeld
Cited by Pliny the Elder, Mount Bargylus, known today as Jebel Al-Ansariyé, spreads from the Orontes Valley near the ancient city of Antioch to the Eleutherus Valley in the south of ancient Emesa. This land is a country of mystery and legends where wine and alphabet were revealed to man and where the ancients grew vines more than 3000 years ago. Located in the hinterland of the Hellenistic city of Laodicea – the modern Syrian city of Lattakia – and the Canaanite metropolis of Ugarit, the slopes of Mount Bargylus were richly covered with vines during the Greco-roman era. The Johnny R. Saadé family created Domaine de Bargylus to revive this vineyard that was planted by the Romans 2000 years ago and to honour this ancient terroir. Although surrounded by a rude environment and extreme working conditions, Bargylus carries on its production, a real symbol of perseverance.

Thokozani Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate

Responsibility, development together!

Photo: Workers of Thokozani
Thokozani means ‘celebration’ – a more appropriate name for a story about generosity, hope, inspiration, dedication and “upliftment” is hardly possible. Thokozani has its own wine brand and guesthouse which are 80% owned by the staff. Thokozani is based and cultivated on the prestigious Diemerfontein Wine & Country estate in Wellington, South Africa, in the heart of the Cape Winelands. The commitment of proud owners David and Susan Sonnenberg of Diemersfontein to developing their employees’ family wealth and skills formed the basis for their vision to create a partner company that would facilitate their aspirations in a way that embraces the principals of true “upliftment” and Black Economic Empowerment. Thokozani became the first and only BEE company to sign an exclusivity agreement with the Major Retailer WOOLWORTHS in South Africa and was awarded the overall winner at the Chamber of Commerce for most successful Transformation Business in South Africa.
The Managing director of Thokozani Denise Stubbs was elected to represent the staff, who has an 80% shareholding in Thokozani, as a Director and has held this position since 2008. It was always her passion to plough back into the “black” community.
