ISRAEL: SMALL COUNTRY – MAGNIFICENT WINES

Cologne, Tel Aviv January 2015 - The critics of the International Wine Guides agreed on a certain point: Israel‘s wines are at the top of the „wine“ league. Robert Parker, Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson (MW) and many more are full of admiration for Israel’s new wine generation and their wines in their new publications. The wines can now be found in the best restaurants and at important wine merchants around the world.


Over the last two decades the Israeli wine industry has undergone a rapid development. One reason for this is the outstanding knowledge of the new generation of Israeli cellar masters who have completed their apprenticeships in the best châteaus and studied in renowned institutes in Bordeaux, the U.S., Australia and Geisenheim.


Another reason is the investment by the wineries into state-of-the art cellar technology, and a third is the consistent change in the range of grape varieties which are based on research results regarding the particular diversity of the climate zones and terroirs in Israel. Primarily cultivated are the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah/Shiraz, Grenache, Sangiovese, Malbec, Marselan. For the white wines, Israel’s winemakers concentrate mainly on the varieties Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Marssanne, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Viognier.


Geographically speaking, Israel belongs to the eastern Mediterranean; therefore it has a predominantly Mediterranean climate: long, hot summers; short, humid winters; snow in the mountains and as well as desert conditions in the Negev; but also the alternation of warm days and cool nights that is so important for wine. Wine is cultivated on approx. 5,500 hectares.


The vineyards extend from the Northern Galilee via Mount Carmel and the Jerusalem mountains to the Negev desert in the south. The vineyards reach up to 900 metres in the north, in certain spots even up to 1200 metres above sea level. Even in the South of Israel, in the Negev desert, which does not consist of a sandy plain, but rather from a barren rock formation, the vineyards lie between 500 and 800 metres above sea level. In the Golan Heights you will find almost completely volcanic soil whereas in the plateaus of high and medium altitude of the Galilee you find terra rossa, clay and volcanic soils. In the lower areas of the Judean Plains and the Judean Mountains limestone, clay, terra rossa and gravel dominate. The vineyards do not constitute large continuous areas of land, but rather small-scale vineyards.


There are 250 commercial wineries, including large-scale operations as well as small boutique wineries. The 40 largest producers harvest 50,000 tonnes of grapes per year. Israel produces 36 million bottles per year in total. Red wine is predominantly produced which takes the lion’s share with 63%. The white wines have a 16% share, followed by sparkling wines, rosés and sweet wine. The main export countries are: United States, Western Europe, and Canada and Japan.
