The leading ProWein fair has it all – fine brandy, cognac, single malts, grappa and exotic cachaça. Of the fair’s more than 3,000 total exhibitors over 300 will be showcasing new products in the spirits section at ProWein 2010 (21 to 23 March). The range is concentrated in the spirits hall 7a. Furthermore, country-specific spirits can also be found on many stands in the wine halls. A handy Pocket Guide gives trade visitors perfect pointers to guide them through the comprehensive range at ProWein.

Spirits from Around the World

ProWein 2010 will be presenting spirit innovations from 26 countries. Liqueurs from Finland will be presented for the first time from Shaman Spirits. The island of Mauritius will also be celebrating a premiere at the fair with the rum specialist Saint Aubin Premiere. A wide range of spirits is also offered by such nations as Austria: the country is represented for the first time this year on a joint stand in Hall 7a (among others with Gölles and Jöbstl). Furthermore, the Tasting Lounge organised by Austria’s international competition “Destillata” will provide an overview of recent prize-winning fine brandies. Also new: Liebl – the first whisky distillery in the Bavarian Forest.

Spirits Rediscovered

Overall the trend in the spirits segment is moving towards new and unusual mixing ideas. For instance, Brazilian firm Jericoa demonstrates that cachaça is not just suited to classic caipirinha and presents a new cocktail combination with smoked ice under the heading “Smoking Signals”.

Even that time-honoured drink cognac is now being rediscovered for trendy new mixes. This is shown by numerous cognac exhibitors such as Ferrand, ABK6, La Gabare, Distillerie Tessendier & Fils and Cognac Voyer. Though gin specialist Broker’s from England and the whisky supplier Beveland from Spain are also focusing on innovations and launching new drink variations, too.

FIZZZ Lounge presents itself in Triumph

The FIZZZ Lounge organised by publishing house Meininger Verlag is this year very much in World Cup mood. Under the motto “Cocktails for Champions” event drinks will be mixed using spirits from the great footballing nations. For Brazil the line-up includes rum and cachaça while the Italian team centres on bitters and herbal liqueurs. English fans swear by cocktails with gin and Spain deploys its brandy tactics.
