The punch line: Pinot Grigio. It is both one of the most successful....


...And so we find middle path with our third wine. The 2012 Scarbolo Friuli Grave Pinot Grigio ($18, 13.5%, Importer: Dark Star Imports) isn't fully ramato; Valter Scarbolo makes a more deeply colored version called XL. But here you'll find more color and weight, and lower acidity, than you'd expect in Pinot Grigio.
In the glass, you might detect tangerine peel, cured olives and the autumnal character of ripe apple....
