A region with strong traditions in quality wine production, where the first reference dates back to the royal charter awarded by Afonso Henriques in 1170 to the city of Santarem, a charter which was protected by Pedro I, Fernando, Afonso V and João II because of their predilection for the wines produced there.
A demarcated wine-producing region (Denominação de Origem Controlada) consisting of the sub regions of, Cartaxo, Santarém, Almeirim, Coruche, Tomar and Chamusca.
Our project is different, an alternative to the “sun and sea”, 100 hectares large, located in Vila Chã de Ourique, Cartaxo, in Portugal. It stands in three complementary vectors: high quality wine production; wine tourism, events planning.
Vale D’Algares undertakes the assignment of developing a touristic project and a business solution mixing several business units, by providing excellent service, oriented towards the specific needs of each client and capable of causing emotions and remembering. Our aim is providing high value-added quality services and products that are synonymous of excellence and that set an standard for the Ribatejo at the national level and for Portugal and Ribatejo at the international level.
Each plant originates a bottle of wine, which enables maximum quality, concentration and freshness. In 2007, 125 thousand wine bottles were produced (new vineyard). “Vale d’Algares” (Super Premium species) and “Guarda Rios” (Premium species), are the available brands, as well as a “Vale d’Algares – late harvest”.
The vineyards occupy an area of 31 hectares, distributed over two areas, Vale D’Álgares with 16 hectares of red grape varieties and 6 hectares of white grape varieties, Quinta da Faia Vale D’Algares Estate Vineyard with 5 hectares of red grape varieties and 4 hectares of white grape varieties.
Irrigation is provided by the rise and fall of the phreatic water level controlled by underground sounding leads and a drop irrigation system.
Each plant’s yield is controlled by bunch pulling at different phases to obtain an approximate harvest per plant of 1.2 kg, The grapes are harvested into 12,5 kg boxes, which are then left for 24 hours in a refrigeration chamber at low temperatures.
A modern winery was built in 2004 with sophisticated equipment and temperature control devices such as refrigeration chambers that allow the grapes to be cooled for pressing at 0ºC and thus preserve the characteristics of the grape varieties. The winery has a fermentation capacity of around 400 tones, equivalent to 350,000 bottles/year.
French oak barrels with capacity for 135.000 ltrs that permit micro-oxygenation and a very good wine maturation, refrigerated stainless steel tanks with pistons that simulate the crushing action of feet and with capacity for 10,000 ltrs, two stone tanks that provide the optimum ratio between liquid and quantity of grape solids and refrigeration chambers that allow control over the fermentation of white wines in small oak barrels.
The cellars are split over two storey’s and contain a barrel staging area, racking hall with bottling line, private wine cellar with 600 oak barrels of 225 liter. Different types of toasted wood and forest woods are used, 90% made of French oak and 10% made of American oak.

Vale D Algares established in national and international markets as a wine excellence producer, and therefore opens its doors to receive the wine lovers that lookout for wine tourism visits in the region of Ribatejo. To visit Vale d ' Algares is a surprising trip through nature and unique architectural details, where you can dazzle the fantastic existing ecosystem, surrounded by 31 hectares of vineyards with different varieties completely in harmony with the surrounding landscape and also visit the winery that was converted from an existing building whose original facades were recovered and live on, the space stands out for its rigorous detail of finishing’s, the stone wine press, mashing tubs, the wood, steel and sophistication of the equipment, for that reason Vale D Algares offers the visitor a wide-ranging of activities that surely will surprise you. In the Vale d'Algares Building we offer wine cellars, the Vale d'Algares room and the Hall Royal, which provides support for congresses, conferences, seminars, product presentations, training courses, workshops, cocktail parties and wine tasting, among other events.
A few metres from the Vale d'Algares Building we have the Estate Vale d'Algares with an area of around 100 hectares, 31 of which stretch along the valley, where the grapes for the production of Vale d'Algares wines are grown. The Farm project was conceived to attract large-scale events and high-quality sporting activities.
